Baan Tong Luang

Baan Tong Luang is a quaint village in Chiang Mai, and one of the city’s stellar tourist attractions due to the presence of the Hill Tribes who still live here.

Located just 30 minutes north-west from Chiang Mai, Baan Tong Luang is a step back in time where you will see long necked ladies with coils around their neck selling a range of goods.

Baan Tong Luang Hill Tribe Village, Admission Fee & Tours, Thailand

There are four distinct Thai hill tribes occupying this area which include the Hmong, the White Karen, Lahu as well as the Long Necked Karen.

Each of these hill tribes are unique, ranging from their cultural practices to their way of life and societal nuances. Celebrating these differences is what makes a visit to Baan Tong Luang such a unique experience. The blend of cultures and the interactions with the locals here is an eye-opening experience.

Interestingly, the villages are surrounded by scenic rice terraces and verdant fields that are filled with water buffalo. The village is set up like a craft market with stalls displaying souvenirs and hand made items. As you walk through the village, you will be offered a number of items for sale ranging from intricate embroidery, traditional clothing, elaborate jewellery as well as hand woven scarves and bags.

If you wish to take a photo of a lady with rings around her neck, it is polite to ask before taking their picture, most will say yes anyway.

The village costs 500THB to enter which goes towards sustaining this traditional, yet tourist based, lifestyle. The village is almost like an exhibition of what a traditional village would look like, however is welcoming and you will see plenty of smiling faces of the locals who will be happy to have you visit.
