Pai Bus Station

Pai is a popular destination for travellers as it is a small rural town located in the northern parts of Thailand and has a casual and relaxed vibe.

The Pai Bus Station is a small station located right in the centre of town and is the terminal for mini-buses and government buses that make regular trips to and from Chiang Mai.

Connecting Chiang Mai to Pai is route 1095, a steep road that snakes its way across the landscape with a hilly and windy journey. A mini-bus journey takes around 3.5 hours and costs a cheap 150 THB. The buses have air-conditioning and stop once along the journey for a toilet stop. Mini-buses leave Pai around 8-10 times per day between roughly 7.30am – 4.30pm.

If taking a bus to Pai via bus, this is the station at which you will arrive and depart from. There is a ticket booth on site, and you can purchase tickets for a return trip on the day, or you can go there and purchase your ticket up to 2 days in advance. But make sure you get there early to purchase the time of your choice, as the morning routes do fill up fast and you might find yourself waiting for the afternoon bus.

There are plenty of restaurants and massage parlours located at the bus station, so it is easy to while away the time if you have to wait for your bus.

  • Hello,

Can you please inform me whether there is a direct bus from Pai to Chiang Rai or from Chiang Rai to Pai?

I’m looking to travel next January or February.

    Thank you.

    Steve

    • Hi Steve,

I have looked at numerous booking sites and Google maps and it appears that there is no direct direct buses from Pai to Chiang Rai, and vise versa.

Looking at the route, it seems like the most efficient route to get from Pai to Chiang Rai is actually is to go back through Chiang Mai. So you might just need to book 2 separate buses and allow enough time to transfer – just make sure the bus terminals are the same or they are the ones across the road from each other.

From past experiences, the Pai buses have left from the train station (or they picked me up form my hotel), while the Chiang Rai Buses leave from the bus terminal out near Central Festival – so just keep note of which bus stations the buses leave from or you will need to get a red truck or tuk tuk from one terminal to another (and they will likely try charge you the same price as the 3+ hour bus ticket to do so).

      Thanks
      Michael
