Huai Nam Dang National Park

The Huai Nam Dang National Park is a breathtakingly beautiful national park that stretches from Chiang Mai up to Pai.

The park is located high above the mountains; a tranquil, scenic environment set amongst rugged peaks in the Thailand-Myanmar border.

It is best known for the sea of mist found at the top, which is what rewards visitors who are courageous enough to hike the park during the cold season. The incredible sea of mist is the result of ultra-low temperatures with sunny, clear weather. But whether you choose to visit during the cold or hot season, there’s no doubt that the views here will captivate you. On a sunny day, you can even see the spectacular Doi Chang Dao mountain peeking from behind the sea of clouds.

The entire park covers an area of around 1,253 square kilometres of mountainous ranges. It is home to a thriving ecosystem with virgin forests, serving as the major tributaries for rivers and streams. Some of the beautiful streams found here include the Huai Mae Hi, Huai Mae Yon Klang, Huai Mae Ping, Huai Nam Dang, and the Huai Mae Chok Luang; which eventually converge to form the Mae Nam Dang, Mae Nam Ping Noi, and Mae Nam Pai.

The Dio Kio Lom viewpoint is one of the major attractions of the park. From here you can see the sea of clouds while relaxing in a lush green environment punctuated with colourful flowers and vibrant plants left and right. The Doi Chang viewpoint, just 20 kilometres after the Dio Kio Lom viewpoint, is another terrific area and the highest point of the national park. It’s only accessible by taking a four-wheel drive, but it’s worth it because of the sheer natural beauty of the place.

The national park is home to a diverse range of mammals and wild animals such as elephants, deer, tigers, bears, mongoose, macaques, civets, porcupines, the common wild boar, hundreds of bird species, and much more.

The rainy season at the Huai Nam Dang National Park is from May through October; winter is from November through February, and summer is March through April.
