Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral is a unique attraction in its own right for the simple reason that it is a catholic church nestled in a Buddhist country.

The Church is one of the few cathedrals where Thais who practice Christianity can go to practice their faith. The cathedral is located in Chiang Mai to the west of the Ping River.

The church’s history dates back to the mid-20th century when Pastor G. Merabell and a monk of Thai origin partnered together to build a cathedral that would bring together Christians living in Chiang Mai. The architectural design of the cathedral borrows heavily from European styles.

Some of the most noticeable features include the cross-decorated dome as well as the square form of the cathedral. Inside, it is evident that attention to detail was paid with the presence of elaborate drawings and intricate glass designs. The carving of the main wooden door is testament to the precise details that make this church one of the most unique attractions in North Thailand.

It is important, however, to note that prior to visiting the cathedral you need to get in touch with the church’s management through the Pastor’s numbers. Without prior booking, guests are not allowed to wander into the church.

Mass times in Thai are scheduled at the following: Monday-Saturday at 7pm and on Sundays at 6.30am, 8.30am, 11am (English) and 6pm.
