Wat Chetawan

Wat Chetawan is a must-visit temple located close to the old city of Chiang Mai, right near the popular Tha Phae Gate.

Folklore has it that the temple was constructed in 657 during the reign of Queen Chamawethi. The Queen, according to the legend, transported one of the most beautiful images of Buddha from Lopburi to Chiang Mai. On arrival, the image was enshrined at the present location of the temple.

At most of the gates around the temple, there are mythical creatures whose purpose is to guard the temple from evil. The temple consists of a Lanna-inspired viharn, the ordination hall (also known as ‘ubosot’), the chedi as well as the spacious viharn made from brick. The viharn whose structure is infused with Lanna culture stands out thanks to its multi-levelled roof.

The temple is located 300 metres east of Tha Phae Gate. You can walk here and should take less than 10 minutes. Any red truck (songthaew) can take you within the old city for no more than 30 THB per person.

On the temple grounds, you will also find many stalls and local people selling food and drinks. You can also get a massage here, buy souvenirs and get a coffee.

As with all temples in Thailand, visitors must ensure they are dressed respectfully. This includes covering knees, shoulders and midriffs.
