Wat Chomphu

Wat Chomphu is a lovely Buddhist temple found just outside the Old City of Chiang Mai.

This temple is famous for its intricate golden chedi (which can be seen in many other wats), although this one is worth visiting for its unique history and significance.

What makes this temple stand out is that it’s in an unusual location, because it feels as though the beautiful city has been carefully built around it. Spend some time at the temple, learn a thing or two about Buddhism here, and if you’re lucky, you may even meet one of the monks who roam the area – as they live and work in the temple. The monks are distinct for the bright saffron-coloured robes that they wear here.

As you visit the temple, it is best to keep in mind the appropriate temple etiquette. By nature, Thais are forgiving and will rarely show if you have offended them. But it’s always best to avoid doing so in the first place. So when you make your way here, dress properly by covering up bare shoulders and legs. You may bring a sarong or scarf to cover you up as you enter the temples. Avoid pointing at anything especially in the temples because this is considered extremely rude in local culture. Don’t forget to remove your shoes before entering any temple.

The area surrounding Wat Chomphu is quite picturesque as well. After visiting the temple in the hot Chiang Mai weather, you may want to grab a bite or refreshments nearby, which is easy with the many local establishments found here.

Getting to the temple is easy; all you need to do is get onto Chang Moi Road, walk east away from the moat and then take the first left. You’ll find yourself on Chang Moi Kao Road, and the temple will be tucked in a small area off the road to your left.
