The Navel City Pillar of Chiang Rai

The Navel City Pillar of Chiang Rai is a well-known landmark. Just like any other Thai cities which have a city pillar, it is typically made using stone and placed in an area that signifies the heart of the city.

Also known as the Sadu Meuang, this one is rather unusual because instead of having just one pillar like other cities, it is actually composed of 109 different pillars.

These attractions were erected on 1987 during the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which also marked the 725th anniversary of the city of Chiang Rai. A former governor named Mr. Aram Aiem-arun supervised its construction, and it was supported by all including the residents of the city, the Social Research Institute of Chiang Mai, the German government, and the private sector.

This landmark is found on top of Chong Thom Hill, within the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong. It features one main pillar, which the other 108 are constructed around it. Together, they are all created using Khmer design with Lanna influences; a design philosophy that combines both Hindu and Buddhist theology. The central column stands on top of a triangular base made of marble; it is said to be five times the width of His Majesty’s fist, and just as tall as he is.

Furthermore, the outside pillars represent the 6 realms of heaven. Another intriguing feature of the Navel City Pillar of Chiang Rai is the National Cultural Cell of Chiang Rai, which is found just nearby. The cultural cell was built on January 19, 2001; in it contains cultural evidence of culture although these items are kept underground, only to be opened 100 years after it has been buried.
