Pai Bus Station is the central departure and arrival point for regular Prem Pracha services linking Pai with Chiang Mai and other stops in Mae Hong Son Province. Its town-centre location makes it convenient for travellers staying around the walking-street area, but a confirmed seat and the right departure time matter more than the station’s size.
The Chiang Mai journey follows the winding mountain road of Route 1095. Plan it as a substantial transfer between towns, with separate transport at the Chiang Mai end if you are continuing to a hotel, airport or train.
Routes from Pai
Prem Pracha’s Route 612 connects Chiang Mai Arcade, Pai, Pang Mapha and Mae Hong Son. Pai is one stop along that wider corridor, so buy a ticket for the actual destination rather than assuming every departure ends in Chiang Mai.
For Chiang Mai, current listings show regular daily departures from Pai between about 7am and 5:30pm. The dated timetable and available seats determine your options. The reverse journey has its own departure schedule, which should not be used to plan a trip leaving Pai.
A scheduled Pai-to-Chiang Mai journey is around four hours, with actual arrival affected by traffic and road conditions. If connecting to a flight, train or long-distance coach, leave a generous buffer and include the transfer from Arcade to the next departure point.

Ask where your larger bags will be carried and whether any additional luggage charge applies. Keep valuables, documents and anything needed during the journey in a small bag with you. Protect belongings appropriately if the operator loads them outside the passenger compartment.
Carry water and use the facilities before boarding. Ask the operator beforehand if you need help with vehicle steps or seating.
Finding the Station and Continuing in Chiang Mai
The station is on Chaisongkhram Road in Wiang Tai, central Pai. It is close to the town’s walking-street area and Wat Pa Kham, so many central guesthouses are within a manageable walk. Use the actual station pin rather than a travel-agent office offering tickets.
Chiang Mai services are listed for Arcade Terminal 2, east of central Chiang Mai. This is separate from Chang Phuak Terminal 1 north of the Old City. An Arcade arrival does not take you directly to the airport, railway station or Old City hotel; arrange the onward journey from the bus terminal.

I have looked at numerous booking sites and Google maps and it appears that there is no direct direct buses from Pai to Chiang Rai, and vise versa.
Looking at the route, it seems like the most efficient route to get from Pai to Chiang Rai is actually is to go back through Chiang Mai. So you might just need to book 2 separate buses and allow enough time to transfer – just make sure the bus terminals are the same or they are the ones across the road from each other.
From past experiences, the Pai buses have left from the train station (or they picked me up form my hotel), while the Chiang Rai Buses leave from the bus terminal out near Central Festival – so just keep note of which bus stations the buses leave from or you will need to get a red truck or tuk tuk from one terminal to another (and they will likely try charge you the same price as the 3+ hour bus ticket to do so).
