Chulalongkorn Memorial Day

Chulalongkorn Memorial Day is a national holiday in Thailand observed every year on October 23rd to honour King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), one of the country’s most revered monarchs.

Known as “The Beloved Great King,” King Chulalongkorn ruled from 1868 to 1910 and is celebrated for his visionary reforms that modernised Siam (as Thailand was then known) and safeguarded its independence during an era of intense colonial expansion by Western powers.

King Chulalongkorn is credited with a series of sweeping reforms that transformed Thailand into a more modern state. He abolished slavery and the corvée labour system, reformed the tax structure, modernised the military, judiciary, and education system, and developed critical infrastructure such as railways and telegraphs.

These efforts not only improved the quality of life for his subjects but also strengthened Siam’s sovereignty, enabling the nation to remain the only Southeast Asian country not colonised by European powers.

On Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, Thai people pay tribute to King Rama V’s legacy. The most prominent ceremonies are held at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok, where a grand equestrian statue of the king stands. Members of the royal family, government officials, and the public present floral tributes and wreaths at the monument. Across the country, similar events take place in towns and provinces, with people lighting candles, offering prayers, and attending commemorative talks or exhibitions about the king’s life and achievements.

The day is both solemn and celebratory, reflecting national pride and gratitude for a monarch whose reign is often seen as the foundation of modern Thailand. It is a time for reflection on how his progressive vision continues to shape Thai society today.

For visitors in Thailand, government institutions remain closed on this public holiday, but many business enterprises remain operational as usual.
