Chiang Mai Waterfalls

Chiang Mai is surrounded by beautiful waterfalls hidden among mountain forests, national parks and jungle landscapes. These waterfalls are among the most popular natural attractions in Northern Thailand, offering visitors the chance to swim, hike, relax, and escape the tropical heat.

Many waterfalls are located within easy driving distance of Chiang Mai city, making them ideal for day trips and outdoor adventures.

One of the most famous waterfalls near Chiang Mai is Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls. Unlike most waterfalls, the limestone rocks here are naturally grippy, allowing visitors to climb directly up the flowing cascades without slipping. The unique mineral coating on the rocks creates an experience unlike any other waterfall in Thailand. Surrounded by forest scenery and picnic areas, the Sticky Waterfalls are especially popular with families, photographers and adventure travellers.

Another must-visit attraction is Wachirathan Waterfall, located within Doi Inthanon National Park. This powerful multi-tiered waterfall crashes dramatically into the rocky gorge below and is often surrounded by mist and rainbows during the wet season. Easy access from the main road and nearby walking paths make it one of the park’s most visited natural attractions. The cool mountain climate of Doi Inthanon adds to the appeal, especially during Thailand’s hotter months.

Also within Doi Inthanon National Park is Mae Ya Waterfall, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Northern Thailand. The wide cascade flows down multiple rock tiers surrounded by lush greenery, creating a stunning natural setting. During the rainy season, the waterfall becomes especially impressive as water rushes across the broad rock face.

Closer to Chiang Mai city, Huay Kaew Waterfall is a popular spot located near the base of Doi Suthep mountain. Easily accessible from the city, the waterfall attracts both locals and tourists looking for a quick escape into nature. The surrounding forest area also offers walking trails and shaded picnic spots.

Travellers exploring the mountains north of Chiang Mai often visit Mok Fa Waterfall, located within Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. This tall single-drop waterfall plunges into a large pool surrounded by dense jungle and towering cliffs. The peaceful atmosphere and scenic surroundings make it a favourite stop for nature lovers and photographers.

Many waterfalls near Chiang Mai are best visited during or shortly after the rainy season from May to October, when water levels are at their highest, and the surrounding forests are especially green.

Visitors should wear comfortable footwear, as some waterfall trails can become slippery or uneven.

Whether climbing limestone cascades, hiking through mountain forests or relaxing beside jungle pools, the waterfalls near Chiang Mai provide some of the region’s most memorable natural experiences and remain among Northern Thailand’s top outdoor attractions.
