To enter Chiang Mai, you need entry permission, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, and onward transport to your accommodation. A visa exemption allows eligible visitors to enter without a visa in advance, while a visa grants permission for its stated purpose and conditions. The arrival card is a separate declaration used for the entry journey.
Nationality, passport type, purpose and intended stay determine the appropriate entry route. Use Thai Immigration Bureau information or the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for the application when selecting it. An ordinary holiday, a longer stay, and a visit involving work do not necessarily use the same permission.
Passport, Visa and Supporting Documents
Prepare the passport and supporting documents required for the chosen visa or exemption, with names and travel details matching the journey. Keep accommodation details and onward-travel evidence available where required. An approved visa, its validity for entry and the stay granted at the border are related but distinct parts of the process.
If you leave and re-enter Thailand, plan the next entry separately rather than assuming your existing stay continues automatically. Immigration records the admission and permitted departure date. A TDAC confirmation does not extend that permission or guarantee admission.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card: Who Needs It?
Most non-Thai visitors entering Thailand need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, or TDAC, for air, land, and sea arrivals. It is a free immigration declaration, separate from a visa. Thai official guidance identifies exceptions for travellers remaining in transit without passing immigration and for entry using a Border Pass; the Immigration Bureau’s FAQ also exempts crew.
A normal passenger should not assume that a transit-labelled ticket creates an exemption. If the itinerary requires entering Thailand, the declaration generally applies. Children and infants also need their own traveller details, even when an adult submits the family’s information together.
Submitting and Checking the Declaration
Submit through the official Immigration Bureau portal at tdac.immigration.go.th within its three-day window before arrival, including arrival day. Have passport, entry-journey and accommodation details ready, along with any requested health information. The official declaration is free, with no paid submission service required.
Review the information against your passport before submitting, and keep the confirmation so you can access it without relying on airport internet. Follow the official correction process if plans or details change; some identity fields cannot be edited. A new entry needs a new declaration, so do not reuse one from an earlier holiday.
Bangkok Connections and International Arrivals
After clearing immigration in Bangkok, a domestic flight to Chiang Mai is an onward leg within Thailand, not another international entry. Some airline connections instead use international-to-domestic transfer procedures. Follow the operating airline’s connection and baggage instructions for your ticket, and allow the necessary transfer time.
When Chiang Mai is your international entry point, follow immigration, baggage and customs instructions before meeting your onward transport. Allow for queues and baggage delays. Keep necessary documents in hand luggage so they remain available before you collect a suitcase.
Medicines and Customs
Thailand regulates some narcotic and psychotropic ingredients used in prescription medicines. The Thai Food and Drug Administration’s traveller service sets out the relevant documentation and permit requirements. Arrange any required authorisation before departure and retain the prescription or supporting documents; legal supply at home does not establish permission to import a medicine.
Follow current customs instructions for the goods you are carrying, and ask officials if you are unsure about a declaration. Treat immigration permission, the TDAC and customs compliance as separate obligations. Complete the process before leaving for the public arrivals area.
Reaching the Old City, Nimman or a Rural Stay
An official taxi, a suitable app-booked car, or an arranged hotel transfer can simplify arrival with bags. Give the property’s full name and actual entrance, ideally with its own map or Thai-language address. The Old City’s moat and temporary pedestrian restrictions can affect where a vehicle stops, while Nimman covers several streets and lanes.
Use the pickup point assigned by the airport service or booking, and ensure there’s enough space for the group and bags. Arrange child restraints, wheelchair-suitable transport or a late-night rural transfer ahead, including a contact method for flight delays. These needs require a specific vehicle arrangement, not an ordinary city pickup.
Before You Leave the Airport
Record the stay actually granted at immigration and promptly raise any apparent error. Keep the hotel address, driver contact and essential documents available offline. For Pai, Chiang Rai or a countryside property, include the longer onward transfer in the arrival plan instead of beginning a separate transport search after landing.
Thailand Entry Requirements & Chiang Mai Arrival Guide FAQs
Do I need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card?
Ordinary non-Thai visitors entering Thailand generally need TDAC, including infants and children. Exceptions include transit without passing immigration, entry using a Border Pass and crew. A connection that involves entering Thailand is different from remaining airside.
When can I submit TDAC?
Use the official portal within the three-day window before arrival, including the day of arrival. Prepare the passport, actual entry journey and accommodation details. Keep the submission confirmation so you can access it during travel without relying on airport internet.
Is TDAC a visa?
No. TDAC records arrival information; it does not replace a visa or establish visa-exemption eligibility. The chosen entry route depends on nationality, travel document and purpose, with immigration determining admission and the stay granted.
Do I need TDAC when entering by land?
It generally applies to non-Thai passport holders entering by land as well as by air or sea. Entry using a Border Pass is a stated exception and differs from ordinary passport entry. The arrival declaration does not itself authorise use of a particular border crossing.
Where should I check visa rules?
Use Thai Immigration Bureau information and the relevant Thai embassy or consulate for the passport and application. Nationality, document type, purpose, intended stay and supporting evidence determine the appropriate route. Later international departure and re-entry require separate arrangements.
