Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport

Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport, also known as Airport Plaza, is a large shopping mall located south of the old city, right near the Chiang Mai Airport.

The shopping centre opened in 1996 and today is a modern mall with a number of popular clothing brands, a supermarket and electrical stores.

The shopping mall, which also doubles up as an entertainment centre, attracts millions of visitors each year. The locals love the complex for its proximity, while the foreigners love the facility for its diversity in selling “western sized” clothing.

The mall is home to a large Robinson department store which sells cosmetics, clothing and electrical items. There are also other popular brands including: Uniqlo, Esprit, Converse, Giordano, Mango, Dorothy Perkins, Clarks, Levis, Lacoste, Nike, Dior, Body Shop, Crabtree & Evelyn and Daiso.

There is also a large Tops Supermarket located on the ground floor where you can purchase both western and Thai products. There are also pharmacies, banks and food stalls located on this level.

You will also find a huge range of services including hairdressers, massage parlours and mobile phone stores as well as computer stores, electrical, jewellery shops and sporting goods stores. On the fourth floor you will find a modern cinema complex which shows the latest blockbuster movies in both English and Thai. There is also a food court located here.

You can get to Airport Plaza via scooter, red truck (songthaew) or tuk-tuk. If coming by scooter, there are clear directions to the parking bays and you can park for free. If taking a red truck, it will cost from the old city around 60 THB per person or around 150-200THB (per ride) for a tuk-tuk.

There is also a free shuttle that runs from the mall into the old city dropping people at various locations as follows: Amore Thapae, Imperial Mae Ping, Central Duang Tawan, D2 Dusit, Suriwong, Royal Princess, The Empress and Holiday Inn. The free shuttle takes around 1 hour to complete a full loop (heading into the old city and back to the mall again). The shuttle departs at the following (approximate) times: 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.00pm, 2.00pm, 3.00pm, 4.00pm, 5.00pm, 6.00pm, 7.00pm!

    • Hi Charles,

You could in theory walk from the airport to Central Plaza as it’s less than 1km in distance, but if that doesn’t sound ideal, there are usually taxis, tuk tuks and songthaews at the airport.

Granted most of those might not be too keen taking you such a short distance as they are looking for a much longer fare, so if haggling doesn’t worth the hassle, just visit one of the taxi counters inside the terminal to organise the trip.

As for the return trip, you can use any of the same methods or use a Grab Car. There may be shuttles that leave the mall, but i think these only go to the tourist areas and not to the airport itself.

      Thanks
      Michael
