Wai Sa Phaya Mengrai is an important festival held in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. Also known as King Meng Rai Festival, the festival is celebrated between 26th January and 4th February each year.
The festival is held to honour Phokhun Mengrai Maharat who was the founding father of Chiang Rai what was then known as the Lanna Kingdom.

The highlight of the festival is the parades made by participating locals. During the parade-formation, it is not uncommon for the foreigners to mingle with the locals and simply savour the magic of time-tested traditions.
This festival is marked with parades, beauty contests and cultural performances. Locals flock to the streets in celebrations and there will be plenty to observe during your time in Chiang Rai. Most of the celebrations will occur in Chiang Rai itself which is only a 3hr trip from Chiang Mai. Head to the provincial stadium in Chiang Rai’s Muang district.
