Loi Kroh Road

Loi Kroh Road is widely known as one of Chiang Mai’s main adult-oriented nightlife streets, particularly after dark.

While it is not as large or as intense as entertainment districts in Bangkok or Pattaya, it has a long-standing reputation as a red light area within the city.

Most of the adult activity is concentrated in small beer bars that line sections of the street, especially toward the middle and eastern end, closer to the Night Bazaar area. These venues are typically open-fronted, with neon signs, bar stools facing the street, pool tables, and music playing at moderate volume. Hostesses often sit outside or near the entrance and may invite passersby in for a drink. The atmosphere is generally relaxed rather than aggressive, and many visitors describe it as low-key compared with Thailand’s larger nightlife hubs.

In addition to beer bars, there are go-go style bars and a handful of venues that cater specifically to adult entertainment. Some massage shops along the road also operate in the grey area between traditional Thai massage and adult services. As with many parts of Thailand, the line between legitimate massage businesses and those offering additional services can vary, so travellers should be aware of the context before entering.

Prices for drinks on Loi Kroh Road are usually higher than in regular Thai bars but still reasonable by Western standards. There is often no formal cover charge at standard beer bars, though go-go venues may have minimum drink requirements. Bargaining is common in certain interactions, but it is important to remain respectful and clear about expectations.

Despite its adult reputation, Loi Kroh Road is not exclusively a red light street. There are regular guesthouses, restaurants, and convenience stores operating alongside nightlife venues, and many tourists walk through simply because of its central location. Families and couples may pass by in the early evening, while later at night, the demographic shifts more toward adult travellers.

Visitors should exercise normal caution, avoid excessive drinking, keep valuables secure, and be aware of local laws and customs. While the area is generally considered safe, it remains an adult entertainment zone and should be approached with caution.

In short, the adult side of Loi Kroh Road is visible and well-established, but it remains relatively small-scale and subdued compared with Thailand’s larger red-light districts.

Tip & Advice For Visiting

Here are practical tips and advice for visiting Loi Kroh Road in Chiang Mai, especially if you plan to explore the nightlife scene.

  • Visit at the right time
During the day, Loi Kroh Road feels quiet and ordinary, with guesthouses, laundries, and travel agencies open. The adult nightlife scene starts building from around 7.00 pm, with most bars becoming active between 8.00 pm and midnight. If you prefer a calmer atmosphere, arrive earlier in the evening. After 10.00 pm, the street becomes more focused on adult entertainment.
  • Understand the type of area
Loi Kroh Road is an adult entertainment zone. While it is not as intense as red light districts in Bangkok, hostesses may approach you to invite you inside. A polite “no thank you” is usually enough. There is rarely aggressive behaviour, but being aware of the environment helps you feel more comfortable.
  • Check prices before ordering
Drink prices are typically higher than in standard Thai bars. Before ordering, glance at the menu or ask the price, especially in go go style venues where minimum drink rules may apply. This avoids misunderstandings later.
  • Be clear and respectful
If you choose to engage with staff socially, be clear about your intentions and expectations. Respect is important. Avoid making assumptions, and remember that many workers rely on tips and bar fines as part of their income structure.
  • Keep valuables secure
As with any nightlife area, carry only what you need. Use a crossbody bag or front pocket for your phone and wallet. Do not leave drinks unattended, and keep an eye on your belongings, particularly late at night.
  • Choose accommodation carefully
Loi Kroh Road has many budget guesthouses and small hotels. If you want easy access to nightlife, staying on or near the road is convenient. If you prefer quieter evenings, consider accommodation just inside the Old City near Tha Phae Gate and walk over when you want to visit.
  • Know transport options
The area is within walking distance of Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar. Songthaews and Grab operate late into the evening, but after midnight availability can thin out, so plan your return trip in advance.
  • Stay aware of local laws
Thailand has strict laws around drugs and public behaviour. Even in nightlife areas, police checks can occur. Avoid illegal substances and behave respectfully in public spaces.

Overall, Loi Kroh Road can be an interesting part of Chiang Mai’s nightlife if approached with awareness, clear boundaries, and common sense.

Getting There

Here is how to get to Loi Kroh Road from different points around Chiang Mai. The road runs east from the Old City moat toward the Ping River, just south of Tha Phae Gate.

From Tha Phae Gate (Old City East Gate)
Distance: about 500 metres
Time: 5 to 7 minutes walking

From Tha Phae Gate, exit the Old City and head east. Walk past the first intersection and continue straight. Loi Kroh Road branches off slightly to the right, clearly signposted. It is an easy, flat walk and the most convenient access point if you are staying inside the Old City.

From Chiang Mai Night Bazaar (Chang Klan Road)
Distance: about 400 to 800 metres, depending on location
Time: 5 to 10 minutes walking

If you are on Chang Klan Road near the Night Bazaar, look for the intersection with Loi Kroh Road. It runs west from Chang Klan back toward the moat. Walking from the Night Bazaar area is simple and well-lit at night, with plenty of shops and hotels along the way.

From Chiang Mai Railway Station
Distance: about 3.5 km
Time: 10 to 15 minutes by car

The easiest option is to take a red songthaew or Grab. By car, head west on Charoen Mueang Road toward the city. Continue straight until you approach the Night Bazaar area, then turn left onto Chang Klan Road and right onto Loi Kroh Road. Expect to pay a moderate fare for a songthaew; confirm the price before departing.

From Chiang Mai International Airport
Distance: about 4 to 5 km
Time: 15 to 20 minutes by car

The airport is southwest of the Old City. The simplest route is by Grab, taxi, or airport transfer. Head north toward Mahidol Road, then continue toward the Old City moat. Enter near the southwest corner, drive along the moat road to Tha Phae Gate, then turn east onto Loi Kroh Road. Public airport taxis operate on a fixed price, which can be convenient for visitors with luggage.

From Nimmanhaemin Road
Distance: about 4 km
Time: 15 to 20 minutes by car

From Nimman, head east toward the Old City via Suthep Road or Huay Kaew Road. Skirt around the moat to the east side near Tha Phae Gate, then turn east onto Loi Kroh Road. Songthaews frequently run between Nimman and the Old City, and from there you can walk.

Because of its central location near Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar, Loi Kroh Road is easy to reach on foot, by songthaew, or via ride share from most parts of Chiang Mai.
