Chiang Mai Area – Lamphun

Lamphun is one of Northern Thailand’s oldest and most historically significant provinces, located just south of Chiang Mai. Once the centre of the ancient Hariphunchai Kingdom, Lamphun is known for its centuries-old temples, peaceful atmosphere and strong Lanna cultural heritage.

While often overlooked by travellers heading to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, Lamphun offers a quieter and more authentic glimpse into Northern Thailand’s history and traditions.

Lamphun Attractions, Best Tourist Places, Activities, Things To Do

The province’s most famous attraction is Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, one of the most sacred temples in Northern Thailand. Originally founded in the 11th century, the temple is known for its impressive golden chedi, intricate Lanna-style architecture and beautifully decorated prayer halls. The temple remains an important pilgrimage site for Thai Buddhists and is the spiritual heart of Lamphun. Visitors are often drawn to the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to experience a less crowded temple compared to those in nearby Chiang Mai.

Another important historical site is the Hariphunchai National Museum, which provides insight into the ancient Hariphunchai civilisation and the region’s cultural history. The museum contains collections of Buddhist artefacts, sculptures, pottery and relics discovered throughout Lamphun province. For travellers interested in Northern Thailand’s early kingdoms and Lanna heritage, the museum offers valuable historical context.

Lamphun is also known for its traditional markets and relaxed local lifestyle. The town centre features riverside areas, quiet streets and local food markets where visitors can sample Northern Thai dishes away from the larger tourist crowds. Walking around Lamphun offers a more laid-back experience than the busier streets of Chiang Mai.

Nature attractions near Lamphun also appeal to visitors looking for outdoor experiences. Mae Ping National Park offers scenic mountain landscapes, waterfalls and forest trails ideal for hiking and camping. The park spans parts of Lamphun and nearby provinces and is especially popular during the cooler months, when temperatures are more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Another popular attraction is Phra Bat Huai Tom Temple, a unique temple complex located in Li District. The temple is notable for its large chedi and its connection to the local Karen hill tribe community, many of whom follow strict Buddhist vegetarian traditions.

The surrounding rural landscapes and cultural atmosphere make it an interesting destination for visitors seeking a different side of Northern Thailand.

Lamphun is also famous for its longan orchards, which play a major role in the province’s agriculture. During harvest season, roadside stalls throughout the region sell fresh longans and other local produce directly from nearby farms.

With its ancient temples, peaceful atmosphere and authentic cultural experiences, Lamphun offers visitors a rewarding escape from the larger tourist centres and remains one of Northern Thailand’s hidden gems.
