Bamboo Rafting

Bamboo rafting is one of the most exciting activities to enjoy in Chiang Mai.

Aside from the thrill and excitement, this activity also gives you a chance to cool down from the heat. Think of it as Thailand’s answer to the river tubing that’s famous in Laos, but with its unique twist.

Although a popular tourist attraction, the rafts are an old form of transportation that has been used in the waterways throughout Northern Thailand for centuries. Due to modern development and road works, they are no longer being used as much, although now tourists can appreciate this fun activity.

The adventure typically begins by a village or will require you to take a short truck ride somewhere upstream. There will always be a licensed tour guide who will take care of you and your group as you raft up and downstream. Because of the adrenaline rush this provides, it’s the perfect activity for anyone looking for some adventure while you’re here.

There are many different rivers to choose from, with the most popular ones being Mae Taeng, Mae Chaem, Ping, and the Yuam rivers. Each of them offers a varying level of difficulty, and thus some are more relaxing while others are much more exciting. The Mae Taeng River, in particular, is known to get pretty wild during the rainy season, so if there is heavy rainfall, you may have to opt for other rivers for safety.

Each raft can accommodate up to four people, sometimes five, if the river water level is high. Given that this is a water activity; you might want to have your bathing suits underneath your clothes. If you’re feeling brave, you can also ask your tour guide for a chance to steer the raft for a few minutes.
