Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is a temple located in the northern-Thai city of Chiang Rai and is considered a sacred site.

Built in the year 1805, this temple has a number of buildings including a golden pagoda and a Chedi which is the focal point of the compound.

One of the key attractions at the temple is the pagoda that is made from gold and stands majestically at the middle of the temple at 14 metres high. A closer look at the chedi reveals a delicate blend of Burmese architecture and Lanna styles.

Look out for the internal pillars that are systematically arranged to include seven levels of circles, all of which depict the structure of the universe. The five water feeders are a representation of the five oceans.

The grounds are worth walking around as there is a viewpoint on the left side of the main temple where you can look down over the mountains of the Chiang Rai Province. Walk up to the City Navel which is composed of a navy pillar and 108 other pillars. The city navel pillar is as high as the King’s height and the local people come here to pay their respects by sprinkling water onto the structure.

As with all temples in Thailand, visitors must ensure they are dressed respectfully. This includes covering knees, shoulders and midriffs.

The temple is located just 3kms from the King Mengrai Monument and you can get there by tuk-tuk. The trip should only cost around 60-80 THB.
