Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient settlement of historical importance in Thailand as it is not just a rich archaeological site, but also a popular attraction.
The settlement is located on the banks of Ping River and is credited to the reign of King Mangrai. This site previously served as the capital of the king’s administration prior to its relocation to Chiang Mai.

The discovery of ancient tablets at Wiang Kum Kam increased its visibility as a choice tourist destination. The tablets unearthed were actually ancient remains of the city. Different sites at this former settlement point to the existence of temples in the area. The findings also indicated that the city was fortified with a stone wall.
Upon your arrival, head to the information centre first, as this will give you some of the basic backgrounds to the site. There are multi-media rooms here as well as plenty of information about the history of Wiang Kum Kam.
The expansive site is too vast to cover on foot, so the easiest way for visitors to get around is to hire the services of a tuk-tuk. Alternatively, use a bicycle or a horse-drawn carriage for a unique experience. The horse carriage will cost around 300 THB per carriage (2-3 people) and the trip will take around 1.5 hours.
You can get out to Wiang Kum Kam via a tuk-tuk and will cost around 300 THB each way. Alternatively, an Uber will cost around 100 THB each way.
