The drive to Tha Ton from Chiang Mai is hilly and windy and takes between 3-4 hours. Once in Tha Ton, you can use it as a base to explore other parts of northern-Thailand, and there is even a boat that will take you down the Kok River to Chiang Rai. The trip takes around 3 hours to Chiang Rai (with the current) and 5 hours back (against the current). Prices for the public boat cost around 350-400 THB per person, or private boats can be chartered for around 2200 THB.
