Chiang Mai Area – Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most popular travel destinations, known for its rich culture, ancient temples, mountain scenery and relaxed atmosphere. As the cultural capital of Northern Thailand, the city offers a mix of historic attractions, outdoor adventures, bustling markets and modern lifestyle districts.

Whether visitors are interested in exploring centuries-old temples, hiking through national parks or sampling Northern Thai cuisine, Chiang Mai has attractions to suit every type of traveller.

Chiang Mai Attractions, Must-See Famous Sightseeing Places To Visit

One of the city’s most famous attractions is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the iconic mountain temple overlooking Chiang Mai. Located within Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, the temple is one of Northern Thailand’s most sacred religious sites and offers breathtaking views across the city and surrounding mountains. The golden chedi, detailed architecture and long naga-lined staircase make it a must-visit destination for first-time visitors.

Within the Old City, travellers can explore some of Chiang Mai’s most historic temples, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. Wat Chedi Luang is famous for its enormous ancient chedi that once dominated the skyline of the old Lanna Kingdom, while Wat Phra Singh showcases beautiful Northern Thai architecture and sacred Buddha images.

The Old City itself is filled with narrow streets, traditional cafes, local markets and historic walls that make it ideal for walking and sightseeing.

Nature attractions are also a major highlight of Chiang Mai. Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest mountain, attracts visitors with waterfalls, hiking trails, cool mountain weather and scenic viewpoints.

Closer to the city, the Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls offer a unique experience: visitors can climb directly up the limestone waterfalls thanks to their naturally grippy surface.

Chiang Mai is also well known for its ethical elephant sanctuaries and outdoor adventure activities. Many visitors take day trips to elephant rescue parks where they can feed and observe elephants in more natural environments. Adventure attractions such as ziplining, ATV riding, and white-water rafting are also popular in the surrounding mountain regions.

For shopping and nightlife, the city’s markets remain among the top attractions. The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar and Sunday Walking Street are packed with street food, handmade crafts, local clothing and live entertainment. Meanwhile, trendy areas such as Nimmanhaemin Road offer stylish cafes, rooftop bars and boutique shopping.

The city also features modern shopping centres, including MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Centre and Central Festival Chiang Mai, combining international retail stores, restaurants and entertainment venues.

With its combination of culture, nature, food and adventure, Chiang Mai continues to attract travellers from around the world and remains one of the most diverse and rewarding destinations in Thailand.
